Dean, Jim at House of Ghia here. There are several potential sources for door rattles. Let's eliminate them one at a time. 1) The guide plugs in the door slot are also called, "anti-rattle" plugs by VW. In your door their are 2. In most doors there are seven. See an earlier posting on how to install the guide plugs. 2) The door slot felt (found on either side of the glass on your '71) need to be fresh and intact. 3) Fresh door slot window scraper seals are useful. The seal should actually touch the glass for virtually the full length of the door slot. Test to see if your door slot and glass is rattle free. NOTE: You should never actually do what the test suggests. Just satisfy your self that it COULD be done. With the door opened, and the glass rolled up to the top; grab the glass and close the door. What's this! The top of the glass moves 3 or 4 inches before the mass of the door gets in motion. The parts in your door slot need repair. Your tugging motion should almost instantly be translated into moving the mass of the door. You can not "wave" top of your door glass side to side like a cheap fan if it has a tight door slot. If your door slots are tight, then the rattle is probably in the door lock/striker mechanism. 4) Look at both strikers. There are TWO nylon sandwich like pieces in the striker. One of them has a tendancy to crumble and fall out. Strangely, your door keeps latching. But, now it, you guessed it, rattles. The only solution is to replace the entire striker. With out a machine shop you are not likely to be able to take apart your striker (1967-up); and no repair pieces now or then existed for this striker. 5) Look at the latch pin going across the "mouth" of the striker. Does it look like Mike Tyson took a bite out of it? With new hinges, the lock shouldn't be resting so heavily on the pin that it is wearing out. But, the new hinges could have put everything back in place in such a way as to leave metal to metal contact inevitable. Again, replace the striker. Dean, If the urathane buffer is broken out of your striker plate is rattles. (The lower yellow part sandwiched between the two metal plates). Glass inside the door can rattle too. Good luck Scott Very good advice Jim, but you forgot one thing. The door rubber. All the rubber that wraps around the door also keeps it from rattling. If Dean is missing the Door Hinge Pillar weather strip or the Door weather strip or the top window strips (coupe or convertible), this missing rubber could be the source of the rattle. If all that isn't intact... Kelly McCaw ----------------------------------------- One last thing, the push rod connecting the interior door handle to the unlocking mechanism has always rattled against the door frame in my car. Putting a little duct tape around the rod, to cushion it against the door frame, eliminated the rattle.
